On 17 March 2026, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson announced a CAD 28.9 million investment in 12 clean energy technology projects spanning five provinces. The projects include: solid state battery materials research in Quebec (CAD 4.2 million), a tidal turbine prototype in British Columbia (CAD 3.5 million), a direct air capture (DAC) pre treatment unit in Alberta (CAD 4.8 million), an AI based smart grid dispatch software in Ontario (CAD 2.1 million), and a carbon capture and storage (CCS) monitoring system in Saskatchewan (CAD 1.9 million).

Wilkinson stated: “This is just the first wave of the CAD 600 million Clean Energy Innovation Programme for 2026 2029.” Canada’s goal is to achieve a net zero electricity system by 2035 and to become one of the world’s top three suppliers of green hydrogen, critical minerals and advanced nuclear energy. Critics point out that Canada still subsidises fossil fuels more than clean energy (2025 data: CAD 19 billion vs CAD 8.5 billion). The government responded that a new “Subsidy Reallocation Framework” will phase out inefficient fossil fuel subsidies by the end of 2026. The projects are expected to create about 1,800 direct jobs and attract an additional CAD 120 million in private sector investment.
