Mexico to Launch Power and Energy Storage Tenders

On 2 May 2026, Mexico’s National Centre for Energy Control (CENACE) announced a new electricity and storage tender to be launched in July 2026 – the first public renewable energy tender in Mexico since 2019. The tender will seek 4.5 GW in total capacity: 2.7 GW solar, 1.3 GW wind, and 0.5 GW of battery energy storage systems (BESS) with at least four hours of duration. The bidding deadline is 15 August 2026, with results expected by October 2026.
The tender is part of the energy transition plan of the new administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum (inaugurated December 2025), which set a target of raising renewable electricity generation from ~24% in 2025 to 38% by 2030, and to phase out all coal fired power plants by 2036. A special clause requires at least 30% local content (Mexican made solar modules, steel structures, electrical equipment) to boost domestic manufacturing. State utility CFE will act as the off taker, signing 20 year power purchase agreements. Industry analysts expect strong international interest due to Mexico’s excellent solar resources, with prices potentially below USD 30/MWh. However, concerns remain about CFE’s financial condition and grid congestion.
