On 25 February 2026, Transport Canada and Natural Resources Canada jointly announced CAD 97 million in funding for 155 clean transportation projects. The largest portion (CAD 45 million) will build 450 new fast charging stations along the Trans Canada Highway, ensuring a station at least every 150 km. Another CAD 20 million is for hydrogen: three public hydrogen refuelling stations for heavy trucks in Toronto, Montreal and Edmonton. The remaining CAD 32 million will purchase 150 electric school buses and 50 electric city buses, plus installation of charging infrastructure for 20 municipal fleets.
The funding comes from Phase II of the Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Programme (ZEVIP). Additionally, the Canada Infrastructure Bank announced it will increase its investment in EV charging and hydrogen infrastructure from CAD 1 billion to CAD 1.5 billion, responding to automaker concerns about insufficient charging networks. The Canadian Auto Strategy also mandates that ZEVs represent 30% of all new car sales by 2028 (up from 16% in 2025), 60% by 2030, and 100% by 2035. Industry analysts note that despite federal commitment, provincial policy differences (e.g., Quebec and BC have ZEV mandates while Alberta does not) may hinder the formation of a unified national market.
