HDD MALL: A Museum of Industrial Rebirth

Straddling the intersection of memory and future in Chaoyang District, Beijing， the HDD MALL (130,000 sqm) reimagines the retail experience as a museum of art and leisure. Situated adjacent to the historic Coking Plant ruins, the design philosophy of "Tracing Origins, Pioneering the New" bridges Eastern and Western cultures through a spatial dialogue between past and present.

The interior is orchestrated around a looping corridor that doubles as a gallery for structural appreciation, connecting diverse programs while offering framed views of the building’s skeleton. Flanked by glass elevators, the central atrium allows visitors to absorb the spatial grandeur. Underground, the bazaar entrance evokes the nostalgia of old railway stations. Overhead, three domed atriums puncture the roof, filtering natural light through metallic mesh to create a dynamic interplay of shadows that shift with the sun, fostering a contemplative calm amidst commercial vibrancy. Accents of Mondrian’s primary colors punctuate the serenity, balancing artistic dynamism with static repose.

Materially, the project is a testament to circular economy, reclaiming red bricks, grey bricks, and weathering steel from neighboring derelict sites. This juxtaposition of textures offers a raw, primal aesthetic while significantly lowering embodied carbon. Technologically, an integrated AIoT system monitors energy consumption in real-time, optimizes spatial utility, and enables predictive risk management, paving the way for unmanned operations. Ultimately, Huiduogang transcends commerce to become a civic landmark where industrial heritage meets contemporary life—a serene sanctuary for reflection in the heart of the city.
